This is an independent guide to one medical device. It exists because the information available online was either a brochure or a research paper, and most people need something in between.
What this site is
A plain-language explanation of the LUCAS chest compression system: what it does, how it works, where it came from, and what the clinical research has found. It is written for anyone who has encountered the device and wants to understand it, including patients’ families, students, journalists, and healthcare workers outside emergency care.
What it is not
- Not affiliated with the manufacturer. This site has no connection with Stryker, Physio-Control or Jolife AB, and receives no money, products or review from them. LUCAS is a trademark of Jolife AB, a Stryker company, and is used here only to refer to the product.
- Not medical advice. Nothing here should be used to make decisions about a patient. Clinicians follow their local protocols and current guidelines. If someone collapses, call your emergency number and start CPR.
- Not a sales or review site. There are no prices, no comparisons with competing products beyond what the research covers, and no purchase links.
How sources are chosen
Every factual claim on this site links to a source at the bottom of the page. In order of preference these are: peer-reviewed randomised trials and systematic reviews; the current European Resuscitation Council and American Heart Association guidelines; the manufacturer’s own instructions for use and data sheets for technical specifications; and, for dates in corporate history, contemporaneous news reports or regulatory filings. Wikipedia is cited only for background where a primary source was not accessible, and is marked as such.
Where the evidence is mixed, the text says so rather than picking a side. Where a number is approximate, it is written as approximate.
